The University Receives the President of the American Chemical Society

Date:
Sun, 13/02/2011
On February 13th, the Faculty of Science at An-Najah received Professor Nancy Jackson, President of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS is a scientific society based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry; it was founded in 1876 at New York University and has more than 161,000 members.

Professor Jackson gave a presentation about the safe uses of chemical materials, methods of storage and disposal, as well as the best ways to deal with chemicals inside the laboratory. Attendees included Dr. Sulaiman Khalil, Dean of the Faculty of Science, in addition to a number of professors and students from the Faculty.

In her presentation also Professor Jackson spoke about the ACS’s work, particularly with respect to publishing scientific research in the different fields of chemistry. She also explained how researchers can join the ACS and described the kind of scholarships available to them.

Dr. Amer Hamouz, Head of the Public Safety Committee at An-Najah, spoke about the systems that are available at the University which are used to dispose of chemical materials safely. The attendees discussed with Professor Jackson the possible ways to reinforce mutual cooperation and academic exchange between the Faculty of Science and the ACS.

After the presentation, Professor Jackson visited the different research and teaching laboratories which she described as impressive and valued the substantial effort that the Faculty has exerted to develop the teaching of science in general, and chemistry in particular which is evident through the PhD Degree program in chemistry which distinguishes An-Najah from other universities in Palestine.
