Dr. Robert Curtis, a Professor of Combinational Algebra at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, visited An-Najah University where he delivered a lecture at the Faculty of Science about Group Theory. Attendees included Dr. Sulaiman Khalil, Dean of the Faculty of Science, members of the faculty staff and students.
At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Khalil welcomed Professor Curtis to An-Najah and delivered a short presentation about the experience and science of the visiting professor, and the teaching positions he occupied during his career.
In his lecture Professor Curtis spoke about and discussed the Group Theory and its applications in chemistry, physics and other branches of science. Group theory studies the algebraic structures known as groups. The concept of a group is central to abstract algebra. Other well-known algebraic structures, such as rings, fields, and vector spaces can all be seen as groups endowed with additional operations and axioms. He also spoke about the Symmetry Group which also has many applications in other branches of science.
Professor Curtis has worked for 30 years as an Emeritus Professor of Combinational Algebra at the University of Birmingham in the UK. At the age of 16 he was accepted at the Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge University to study mathematics.
