Date:
Wed, 21/12/2011

Dr. Othman Hamed from the Department of Chemistry and Dr. Hani Al-Ahmad from the Department of Biology and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Science at An-Najah University were awarded the Hisham Hijjawi Award for Applied Sciences in its 19th round this year. This is the tenth Hijjawi award An-Najah has received so far.

The Award was announced and presented to the winner researchers from the different Arab countries in a grand celebration that was held in Jordan Monday, December 19th. The celebration was organized under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Awn Al-Khasawneh, Prime Minister of Jordan. Attendees included members of the judging committee, the supervising committee and others.

The Award was granted to Dr. Hamed and Dr. Al-Ahmad for their joint researcher titled “Extraction of Biomaterials from the Residues of Olive Oil Industry and the Extraction of Bio-ethanol from Cellulose”.

Prof. Rami Hamdallah, President of An-Najah, commented on this achievement by saying that this win is a proof on the University’s qualified staff and dedicated researchers who can conduct and accomplish advanced studies on vital issues in the different fields of knowledge. He also congratulated the two researchers on this win and valued their substantial efforts to bring to light such impressive research. Moreover, he emphasized the University’s commitment to supporting researchers and scientists in their work to achieve further success.

Dr. Sulaiman Khalil, Dean of the Faculty of Science, said this success provides the University and the Faculty with great encouragement to further expand their work to make more achievements that would reinforce the University’s status locally and internationally.

Dr. Hamed and Dr. Al-Ahmad thanked the University’s President for his continuous support of the scientific movement in Palestine and his efforts to offer researchers and scientists with whatever they need to accomplish and excel.

It is noteworthy to mention that An-Najah has won the Hisham Hijjawi Award nine times between 1986-2006 in the fields of industry, energy, applied sciences, water and agriculture, industry and environment, environmental pollution by Mercury, as well as pharmaceutical compound analysis.
